Even with a map you could easily get lost looking for this gorgeous hideaway and if you did find it by chance, you can’t see too much of this home demurely sheltering behind the luxuriant tropical vegetation in the front garden! If you park your car and step out, you will surely hear the birds singing in the rainforest of Joalah National Park which seems to almost encircle this location, and, after rain, you will also hear Curtis Falls tumbling over the rocks way down in the dense greenery far below.

Let’s look at location first. It feels as if you are a million miles from civilisation as you look out over your front garden onto the beautiful wilderness of Joalah National Park directly across the tiny little street. Yes, there are two neighbours on the same side of the street, but they too share in this sense of being in a Lost World environment. You would never expect that such a tranquil setting could be found within walking distance of Main Street, North Tamborine where all our local shops and facilities are located and where you will also find some great little restaurants and cafes. Then there’s the abundant birds and other wildlife that have safe refuge in the National Park. They often venture out into this garden. Don’t be surprised if you frequently hear, and sometimes even glimpse, a shy Albert Lyre Bird just on dusk. Living in this locations is really like having the best of both Worlds!

This delightful, about 22 square, slightly Bohemian house is full of interest and character, as befits the home of a real living artist. The ground floor of the home probably dates back around 60 years, which explains those darkly glowing hardwood timber floors with that wonderful patina of age as well as the old solid rock walls in the garden. This part of the home has been totally refurbished structurally before the roof was removed and the new upper level with its timber internal stairs added. Then the lower floor was refurbished to reflect the ambience of the years. The kitchen, with its cafe style open shelves has massive, durably finished timber slabs for bench tops along with fittings like a wall oven, dishwasher, gas cooktop and rangehood. The bathroom was remodelled to include a deep claw-foot bath and traditional, pedestal style, modern vanity. Even the bathroom tiling has that feeling of an earlier era hotel bathroom.

Of course the beautiful and very practical glasshouse style artist’s studio was also added and a new doorway opened out through an original exterior wall. The leadlight French doors used to access the studio almost certainly came from an early 20th century hotel. I remember walking through identical doors in a few pubs I frequented in my long lost youth in country towns like Tamworth and Narrabri in NSW. The studio has excellent natural light as well as lush garden views and is ideal for creative pursuits, but it could also serve as a superb additional living or dining room for when it is too cool to go outside to enjoy the huge expanses of paved garden living that bracket the home on both the front and back.
