“Sundowners” is as special as it is unique! It was purpose built on its magic land with wide street frontage to create a rustic country ambience that seems to recall a past era of quiet country relaxation. Nobody knows how many hours, weeks or even years went into creating that feeling of stepping back in time to when man made his own environment by the sweat of his brow. Tons and tons of rocks, sleepers and pavers went into creating the part of that environment that snuggles into the rest of untouched nature. Plantings of a very lush tropical kind have softened all the edges as they drape over low rock walls and turned the private living zone into a place of serenity that feels far from the maddening crowd, while being just a few steps from the restaurant wall.

Just as the whole property has taken on an almost unreal character, so too has the restaurant building and its open air areas, yet it is a real restaurant with an excellent commercial kitchen (recently updated) and a very romantic feeling enhanced by burgundy and white table linen and artful lighting. It can be closed off to handle a smaller night’s dining requirements or opened out into the large paved and cafe blind enclosed area if guest numbers increase. On a hot summer’s day, all the cafe blinds roll up to present a charming, breezy roofed over space looking out to nature and nurture with the views beyond. The open air dining with large umbrellas enjoys the marvellous outlook into the National Park as well as part of the views that extend right across the lower Albert Valley to the Dividing Range.

Then, there is that railway carriage that stands as both a visual block and a wind break at the rear of the open air dining area. Steps lead up to an added front timber deck where a few tall bar tables and stools sit out in the sunlight for fine days. But when you enter the carriage you step back into the past with its gleaming timbers, traditional lighting, a couple of old brass luggage racks and a full timber bar at one end. Here too there is seating for those relaxing with a drink as well as a piano at the other end should someone feel like tinkling the ivories. Remove the piano, and you have more space for seating more drinkers. A separate bar area in the restaurant actually caters for diners.

All this restaurant has ever needed to make it hum is a good chef! It is the only restaurant currently operating on the southern end of Tamborine Mountain so has a good local client base for both day and evening dining, and tourists flock to it also! It is on a main road and is the first port of call for anyone taking a walk in Macrozamia National Park. It is such an institution on the Mountain that everyone knows where it is and can direct friends and strangers to it.

The sense of being different and indeed exotic, has been particularly reserved for the unusual A-frame house that is positioned right on the edge of the world, so it feels. All those wonderful features of the classic design with ultra high peaked ceilings and exposed beams have been enhanced by many unusual features like full hand built stone walls, a large free standing stone fireplace, and impressive doors that definitely have been recycled from yesterday, opening to the viewing terrace . There is a defining rustic feeling here that carries right through to the all timber kitchen and even the dining room with its unusual roof angles and exposed timbers. The view from the master bedroom deck is worth taking that walk up the spiral staircase! Indeed, this and the lower terrace both get the gift of the full day sunshine in winter while being ever so cool and shady on summer afternoons and evenings. Both these areas look down onto an open area with many macrozamias where the cabins can be built.

Yet surely, the real magic of this home is in the wonderfully private courtyard with its high solid fencing, where the main partly roofed over outdoor living is positioned next to the pool which is a few steps below the level of this rocked area. This allows both to look into the dense greenery and also out to the views. The home may not suit more conventional folk, but with just a few small improvements and attention to presentation, it would make a wonderful holiday letting property that would complement the 2 cabins when built. That way the owners of the property can live off-site if they want to, and enjoy the income produced from the holiday side of this versatile property while running the restaurant or even leasing it out to a good chef to run his own business.

There is nothing else quite like “Sundowners”! It really does offer a way of having your cake and eating it too, including a good cup of coffee with the cake!
