FEATURES & LIFESTYLE

The setting and privacy adds special appeal here in this very protected spot where the cooling summer breezes blow in from the sea in the afternoon and the winter morning sunshine invites you to open the rear doors and step out onto the verandah. This dreamy single level Mountain style cottage is tucked well down below the level of the road and almost invisible as you drive past it. All you can see from the car is the glint of the roof in the sunshine and the driveway heading down, thanks to very densely planted and well grown tropical greenery along the street frontage and in the front garden.

From up on the street level, it is hard to imagine what charm lies behind the foliage, but follow the well made steps down and you will discover a sweet retreat all on ground level at the front and elevated high above its open glade garden at the rear. The first reaction when you step out onto the back verandah is to feel as if you are surrounded by dense forest. Then you look more closely, and you notice through the trees the end wall of your adjoining neighbour’s house. Look up and out again and you will see a vignette view between the trees that takes the eye out to a northern area of the Gold Coast and further out to the sea. At night, there is quite a long line of glittering Gold Coast lights that can be seen twinkling through the the tree tops. It is only when you look down that you see the terraced back yard with lawns and some really nice ornamental trees planted by the current owners. All of the rainforest trees you look directly out onto are either in the large, untouched rear garden of a long, near 1 acre property that enters from the street below, or in a gazetted Environmental Corridor with permanent spring-fed creek that adjoins it. It is very unlikely that this outlook will ever change.

Warm and cosy best describes this little charmer with its sunshine toned decor and ample large windows to bring in the sunshine and let you look out into the serene green environment that snuggles around the home like a cool mantle. There is a solid timber gate that bars the entrance to the inner sanctum and an attached doorbell on the gate post. When the gate opens, you take a few more steps down and then step up onto the front verandah. A lovely strong glass and timber colonial bar door at the end of the verandah invites you into the open plan living where your eyes cross the room and look out through the ranch sliders to that backdrop of trees beyond. To your right is the all white kitchen, not large, but well designed, with under bench oven, ceramic cook top, 1.5 bowl sink, double door pantry and good big fridge space. In the far corner by the doorway that heads into the main bedroom, you notice the slow combustion wood fire with its rendered brick backing and timber shelf for those knick-knacks above. The kitchen looks out into the greenery just beyond the front verandah where a gravel area is a prime sunny spot away from winter winds. Very unusual modern lighting adds its own charm to the living area when night falls.

Everywhere you look, both inside and out seems to have that little spark of magic that defines the essence of Mountain living, both by day and by night. There are plenty of exterior lights and ample spots for outdoor living, including the fenced tank top that is reinforced to also take a carport on top. It is a cottage that will enchant folk seeking to get away from the conventional while living in a magic, forested setting.
