FEATURES & LIFESTYLE

It all started way back in that “between the wars” period when someone in the Brisbane area built an absolutely classic home with exceptional quality finishing. Even then, the timbers used in this all hardwood home would not have been cheap and no expense was spared in its creation. The all hardwood frame was complemented by hardwood exterior timber and the inside walls were all built from Australian Red Cedar VJ timbers. The floors were made of Crow’s Ash, a light, honey toned timber that is as tough as nails. Picture rails were added as well as high shelves for displaying ornaments and plates. Pressed ceilings were complimented by ornate decorative cornices and those very high skirting boards that really did protect the walls. And there this home sat until its land grew too valuable for a single house and it was put up for sale as a removal home.

Someone saw its exceptional quality and found an excellent over 1/3 acre high on Tamborine Mountain with big Gold Coast views that offered a whole new future for this home. Over the past 3 years the home has been turned into a large family home with exceptional outdoor living and superb quality finishing. The original single level home was elevated on steel to become a double storey home. A new fully insulated roof was installed and all new electrical wiring and plumbing were also installed on both levels. Of course, the creativity did not end there! Like the original home builder, the people who undertook the transformation refused to skimp on quality but rather, concentrated on producing a perfect home which combined that feeling of yesterday with the modern style and space of today.

The main, double timber door entry is positioned below the covered private view deck adjoining the master suite and opens into the tiled entry foyer with the home office door directly across from the entry. The uniform tiling follows around past the carpeted internal stairwell to the quiet family rumpus room that in turn opens out to the screened back garden terrace that is part of the securely fenced dog and child yard. Two superbly large, light and lovely King sized bedrooms with double hung windows open from the rumpus room and a beautiful compact bathroom with modular tub and a another charming double hung window services this level. The laundry is also on this level and is handy to the clothes line just outside the inner fenced yard.

The stairs that twist around a little take you from the entry up to a large landing area at the top of the stairs and a sliding glass door that looks to be made of Silky Oak gives access from there through to the dining and lounge area which are separated by a classic period archway opening between the 2 areas. To say these 2 living spaces are magical is simply an understatement! They retain all the classic features and quality of that original home and have been decorated beautifully. A set of screened glass and timber doors open from the landing area out to the large back deck and the external stairs down into the back garden. This huge rear deck that looks down over the secure garden area and right over the block to where the dense trees lining the creek hide the rear neighbours from sight.

The all new, galley style kitchen is directly accessible from the dining room and here too, what could be retained has been retained and carefully blended with the new. The kitchen looks out over the Coast through a wall of glass that can be opened to provide a serving window to the huge front deck. At one end of the kitchen is an almost floor length narrow window of modern louvres, while at the other end is a security screened door opening out to the sun deck that leads around to the front deck. Open the louvres and the door, and you have a perfect breezeway here! Excellent cabinet design including a pantry with pull-out shelving and glass fronted display cabinets on the upper level has been combined with the latest in kitchen electricals including a large combined stainless steel 5 point gas cook top and large electric oven all in a single unit, as well as a stainless steel dishwasher.

Both the top level bedrooms retain the historic character with the Cedar VJ Timber walls, as does the main bathroom. A large built-in robe in keeping with the history now graces the main bedroom. The ensuite includes all new walls, but careful selection of fittings has also given it a touch of yesteryear. A delightful private north-east facing viewing verandah opens out from the master suite through yet another security screened door and provides a perfect spot for that exercise bike.

The front garden with its white picket fence has been well landscaped and will get more beautiful as the seasons pass. The large open back yard is mainly lawn with just a few young trees until it reaches the dense greenery of the spring fed creek along the back boundary. There is ample space here to create a private park replete with rainforest trees or a great big family area with huge swimming pool. There is absolutely nothing left to do in the home, so you can add your special touch by having fun creating the back garden of your dreams here!
