This solidly constructed Federation style cottage was built from locally milled hardwood some time during the 1920’s by the Geissmann family. Over 80 years of history is bound up inside its walls and one can almost feel that it has many stories to tell. The lovely private garden is the greatest testament to the house’s age as various large trees and shrubs combine with areas of plantings that are decidedly more modern to create a very private living environment within the fully fenced garden. Yes, the interiors have undergone some change, but the changes have been essential ones like modernising the kitchen and bathroom as well as adding some skylights and a slow combustion wood fire for winter warmth. The solid hardwood floors have been re-polished and now glow with that warm dark patina of age that can only come with decades of use.
Somewhere in time some sensible owner converted the wide, south facing front verandah into a lovely glassed-in sunroom. In summer you can open all the windows wide while closing them in winter makes it a perfect extension from the central living room. At some stage, a lovely set of timber & glass French doors were added to join the 2 spaces together in harmony. Just light up the fire and the whole area becomes warm and cosy in winter. More recently, a modern kitchen has been added, but the old recess where the black wood stove once stood has been made over to accommodate a stainless steel upright electric cooker. 3 different sized windows and a skylight focus great northerly light into the kitchen & breakfast bar area while the most stunning pair of French doors open from the eating area out to the large rear deck. Built-in storage cupboards from an earlier era have been retained along the eastern wall with another window looking out into the greenery. Modern lighting has also been incorporated into the kitchen.
The updating of the home seems to have been completed over a quite a number of years and the bathroom suggests that it may have been done earlier than the kitchen, although a modern heater / exhaust light in the ceiling suggests it was not too long ago. The tub is deep and inviting too with good white tiling and timber trim for added character. Both bedrooms feature the polished timber floor, but the study area which could also be a cosy dining space has a carpeted floor.
When you walk out the front gate that is overhung by a lovely Jacarandah tree, you look straight across the street to the bowling greens with the club house behind. The bowling club is a much loved local watering hole that also provides good value dinners - who wouldn’t want to go there for dinner when all you have to be careful of is not being hit by a car as you walk home? The swimming pool is next to the bowling club on the right and on the left there is a handy little shopping centre with video shop, Chinese restaurant and a popular takeaway. It is also within easy walking distance of the shops, restaurants and coffee shops in Main Street. You really can’t beat this location for convenience and for savings on fuel and car costs!
In-town historic cottages such as “Lone Star” rarely come on the market. Sometimes they have been badly let go, other times the sellers have maybe over modernised. This cottage has been well maintained and modernised in keeping with its age. There is ample room still on the land to extend the cottage without intruding too greatly on the garden which is its crowning glory. Over the last twenty-eight years the investment return on such perfectly located historic properties has risen way above the average increase in values here on Tamborine Mountain. It has been recently rented at $360 per week.
