Anyone who loves antiques and early 20th century Australiana could not help but fall in love with this gently refurbished and carefully upgraded original Auchenflower (Brisbane) Post office that has found a new lease of life on an elevated corner in Eagle Heights. It is positioned on a very elevated corner block that is 1,179 square metres in size and adjoins an undeveloped vacant block that is 1,181 squares metres that can also be purchased separately. The home has 2 street frontage and perfect eastern and northerly aspects. It looks down over one of Tamborine Mountain’s most superb original rainforest Environmental Corridors. There are no walking trails into this area due to the extreme steepness of the gorge area that starts just across the road, so far as I can ascertain. About the only way into it from the top side, where this home is located, would be going down by ropes. It is possible to walk up some part of it from lower down on Kinabalu Drive, but impossible to get right up the whole length of it, and there appears to be a natural lake hidden deep within it that is spring fed and creates a natural stream running down under Kinabalu Drive that eventually topples off the edge of the Mountain in a great waterfall a little further over.
As stated in the introduction, this all hardwood home was originally the Auchenflower Post Office built during the 1920’s and recently moved to its new position here. It has been carefully refurbished, but not over-modernised. It has all the traits you would expect to find in a home of this vintage including about 11 foot tall ceilings, all VJ Board walls, classic long double hung windows, original hardwood polished timber floors that have recently been repolished, and fanlights of glass and fretwork. The seller somehow came across some rare black smooth slate tiles and also some tiny antique glazed tiles. These have been incorporated in the bathrooms, laundry and the solid timber kitchen which also features a bench top made from an antique diving board. The solid kitchen includes a walk-in pantry and electric cooking facilities plus a servery to the dining room and a bank of probably original windows for excellent natural light and delightful views out into the garden. Oh! There is also a big deep, stainless steel pot sink beside the standard sink too.
Thanks to the sloping nature of the land, the house is very elevated at front, but has a bridge from the ground across to the back door for easy entry. Much of the area under the house is sufficiently high enough to be made into proper living space and the owner plans to include all the extra doors and windows stored there at present with the sale. She tells us there are sufficient doors and windows to do the whole enclosing bit and have the lower level in keeping with the original house above.
The verandahs and the big northerly deck are just superb! These are spaces made for real outdoor living, just the way our great-grandparents meant them to be. Think maybe a few bits of lattice and lots of cane furniture for that dreamy outdoor relaxing space.
