FEATURES & LIFESTYLE

When you reach the tiny roundabout by the St Bernards State School you notice that a narrower bitumen road turns off left and disappears into thick overhanging rainforest while the main road heads south past the school. Very few people choose to follow the mysterious path into the rainforest. Yet, hidden in there is a tiny little corner of the Mountain that is beloved by those who know it. It almost feels like a different world in there with a mix of nature, farming and hidden homes, mostly on a couple of acres. As you head out of the overhanging rainforest you come into this other world and drive on past a street on your right which is closed off by a gate until you reach the end of the road just a little bit further down. That street on the right is Ben Nevis Street - the only gated street on Mt. Tamborine. Its residents gain access from Siganto Street.

At the corner of these 2 streets you will find this enchanting home with a touch of Alpine styling with its long street frontage facing north into Alpine Terrace. As the road frontage is so densely vegetated, you hardly notice a little driveway that runs up between 2 massive gum trees towards the elevated end of the home and directly into the extra long double garage underneath the house. If you come down Ben Nevis Street to the gate you also see a second, more basic driveway that gives access to the separate double garage and workshop. You really do have to get beyond the trees to see what lies behind them.

When you get inside the land you see the real charm of this single level Western Red Cedar home which is high set on the western end and low set on the eastern end. Steps take you up from the garage level with its wide overhanging deck to the covered front verandah and the impressive antique glass and timber front door. When that door opens you step into a light and very spacious open plan living area with polished timber floors. The room is defined by shape to be lounge at the front and dining over by the kitchen which is not visible from the lounge. The slow combustion heater is on the long western wall and 2 sets of ranch sliders can open wide to the deck to create a very large indoor / outdoor entertaining area. The kitchen has interesting angles as well as a wonderful new cooking centre with a stainless steel Euromaid 5 burner gas cook top and a large electric oven plus a stylish stainless steel ducted exhaust system. Ample cupboards, a big double door pantry and a near new Simpson dishwasher complete the picture.

All the bathing and sleeping facilities are contained in the eastern end of the house and reached via a hallway with double door linen cupboard leading off from the lounge room. The 2-way bathroom is well designed and much enhanced by a unique armour plated leadlight glass feature window shown above in the photo display. All 3 bedrooms are on the northern wall for warmth in winter and cool in summer.

The grounds are well established with a mix of shrubs and trees in the front garden that includes a Japanese style area between the walkway to the BBQ rotunda and the separate double garage. The rear garden is well fenced for kids and dogs and features threes, shrubs and sunny open lawns. Overall, this garden requires minimal maintenance with the hardest chore being to rake the falling leaves out of the Japanese garden. But, this seems to be almost a labour of love in exchange for the beauty and seclusion given by those trees.

We should also mention that while this home feels a bit removed from the mainstream, it is the feeling rather than the reality. The primary school is just a couple of hundred metres away up by the roundabout and both St Bernards Hotel and the corner store are both within easy walking distance. Get the Government first home buyers grant and you will soon be walking the kids to school through the rainforest. It would also suit a crafty person or someone who wants to work from home or people who have need for abundant secure dry storage.
